What Does Heaven Smell Like Grandma?

That was the 'wee man' question of the week.  I had to give it some serious thought.  Well, I said slowly, I think it depends on the person.  I think heaven will smell of everything you love here on earth, it will sound like everything you love here on earth and it will look like everything you love here on earth.
After careful consideration he decided heaven must look like Lego, smell like McDonald's hamburgers and sound like his dog barking.
Hmmmm.  Not a bad combo.
Then I had to think about what my heaven would smell, sound and look like.
When I smell my moms face power and the oil and grease on my dads hands from  working with machinery, when I smell freshly baked bread and the smell of a well cleaned house, when the odour of Campbell's book store rises up around me, when Grandpa's pipe smoke envelopes me, that will be the smell of heaven.  When I hear my dads harmonica and cows mooing and my mom singing softly as she works, that will be the sound of heaven. When I see the long lane way lined with maple trees and the little grey buildings with yellow shutters that once were home that will be what heaven looks like.
Now.....here's the question.   What will heaven smell, sound and look like to you?
Have you ever thought about it?
I'll bet you are thinking about it now.  And all thanks to my 'wee man'.

  1. Your wee man really started something didn't he?
I suspect baking, bird song, and a gently murmuring river would be a good start for me.

    1. Yes, yes he did. That does sound like a good start....especially the baking.

  2. My heaven will smell like vanilla, rich chocolate cake and roast beef. There will be guitars, harmonicas and pianos and thick, weed-free green grass under spreading oak trees, leading down to a sandy beach ringed by rocks with crashing waves and salty air.

  3. Hi Delores,

Your wee man certain poses some intriguing questions. Both you and the wee man certainly have some interesting thoughts about heaven.

The sight and the sound of loons landing on a moonlit lake are my idea of heaven.

Have a peaceful rest of your weekend, Delores.

    1. That sounds pretty good to me too Gary......I remember one camping trip with my parents and listening to the loons 'laughing' on the water. I will always remember that.

  4. I had to come back to this one because the first time I read it I cried too much. The tears are starting up again, but I'll think and type fast: it will smell like lilacs on a June breeze, taste like chocolate mousse with whipped cream on top, and sound like a trickling stream in a forest far from traffic and people.

Your wee man has a wide streak of curiosity and imagination! This is a lovely post.

  5. There is no doubt that entering Heaven will be just like opening the door to my paternal grandmother's home. The sights of family, sounds of laughter and smells of fried chicken cooking, yeast rolls on the table and peach cobbler just out of the oven. Yes I am in tears.

  6. I am hoping that if there is a heaven, it will smell like a Cinnabon.

Your scenario is lovely, Delores. Our hearts ache for the people we love and have lost.

I received your card the other day. Thank you so much for thinking of me.

    1. It's true isn't it? There is so much to enjoy in the present yet we long for the past.
