More Strange WordsI

bindlestiff
a bindlestiff is a tramp or hobo...particularly the type with a long stick over their shoulder with a cloth bundle hanging from it.
Originating in the early 1900's  is supposed to be an alteration of 'bundle' and 'stiff'  (in this event, a useless person).

flummoxed
My mother was often 'flummoxed' ; bewildered or perplexed.  Originating mid 19th century and is assumed to be of dialect origin.  To flummock is to make untidy, to confuse.

absquatulate
Absquatulate means to depart or leave somewhere abruptly.  Originating mid 19th century as a combination of Latin words; abscond, squatte (depart) and perambulate.
I am now going to absquatulate from this blog post.

  1. We do have a rich (and confusing) language. Two of the words you selected today I know (and I use flummox). Absquatulate is a newby - thank you.

  2. I've heard of flummoxed, but not the other two. I'm rather glad they're no longer in use. Imagine trying to explain them to new immigrants and having to spell them too.

  3. Absquatulate - that is a new one on me! I knew the other two and have used them, I don't know why though.

    1. I know. That's a doozy of a theme isn't it? To deprive someone of significance, power or prominence. That is the human definition of eclipse. I went somewhere with it but I have to admit...it's a shaky attempt.

  5. When I got to "absquatulate" I must admit, I was a tad leary to read the definition. I thought it meant to "sit on the bowl"....LOL!...:)JP

  6. Hmm, absquatulate sounds like a very painful abdominal exercise or else a good term for what someone has to do who is constipated. LOL
