Sanctcurary

They are coming across our border, struggling with the cold and snow and the weight of their belongings and the crushing burden of fear.  It wouldn't be the first time people fleeing oppression, real or perceived, crossed into Canada from South of our border.  Some of my own ancestors came here the very same way.  They were United Empire Loyalists fleeing a very primitive form of oppression in the form of beatings, torture and outright murder.  Some of my ancestors came from Ireland during the famine and some from England searching for gainful employment.  Some came from Germany.  Everyone in this country, if they are not First Nations, is an immigrant, or the son or daughter of an immigrant, or the son or daughter of the son or daughter of an immigrant.  No...not the first time and probably not the last. A long line of immigrants built this country.  We did a damn fine job of it too.   Now, we are Canadians.  May you find the peace you seek here and be proud to call yourselves, Canadian..

  1. Amen, Delores. We are all the same, some luckier because we were born after the generation that had to immigrate - but we are all "from away" as they say in Newfoundland.

  2. I am American and proud of it. My DNA tells the story. I am 80% European, 16 % Native American and 4% Sub Saharan African. We are a great Nation though some doubt that these days. We will survive and we will continue to blend into a melting pot forever as will our good neighbors in Canada.

  5. Australia was also built by immigrants seeking sanctuary after the wars, and before that of course were the original convicts from England and Ireland and the soldiers who brought them along with a few settlers.

  6. We wish we had your Prime Minister. Your country is a beautiful example of freedom and compassion. Since the election, we, your southern neighbor, have lost our way.

    1. Your country will rally back from this....We've had a few mis steps ourselves. It's called learning from your mistakes. Humans being what they are I imagine this isn't the end of mistakes both our nations will make during the growing and learning process.

  8. I watched Sunday Morning today after I read your post. I do not know if you get this uplifting program, but it featured your city of Guelph and the owner of a ccompany who sponsored over 50 Syrian refuges to your kind country. He was not alone in his efforts and watching how grateful these new residents were, I could not help but cry. Beautiful!
