Sweet Memories

Gram and Grandad doing the annual Christmas photo shoot.  Early '50's I woujld say.  Note the tinsel garland....just little circles of foil strung on regular string.  Those big lights gave us lots of trouble over the season.  The reflectors fastened to the bulbs served two purposes...they reflected the light and lifted the bulbs away from the branches.

Dad at our house in the 80's.

oldies but goldies

these ornaments hung on my Dads tree when he was a little guy...mid to late '20's

  1. Your family obviously 'did' Christmas much more thoroughly than we ever did. No photo shoots. Ever to my memory.
But in your old but gold shot, I still have and cherish some baubles very like those on the left.

    1. I think those were from the late 60's/early 70's.

  2. Sweet memories indeed. I remember some of my mum's old glass ornaments, tiny birds with real feathers as tails, they were on tiny crocodile clips to clip them to the branches.

    1. We had those birds too. And I think I still have one or two.

    2. If you click on the photo of gram and grandad to enlarge it you will see one of those birds on the tree between them.....ours had more of a brush tail though, no feathers.

  3. I tried to interest Laura in shopping for vintage ornaments, but she wanted new. Surprisingly, all the glass ornaments we found looked very like ornaments of my childhood. To Laura, they looked "new."

  4. I wish I had some of my family's old ornaments. How fortunate you are to have those lovely baubles to bring back good memories and to make more.

    1. Now we decorate with a mix of old and new....The hubs parents silver balls on the tree along with the crochet snowflakes my mom made and some newer ones we bought a few years ago.

  5. Oh, we had the same ornaments! Those balls that were dished in on one side. Those light protectors. We also had a string of lights that were little figurines. Everyone fought over who was going to put those up! I don't know what happened to them. Daddy was terrible at sentiment--except when it came to people--and he probably got rid of the whole works!

  6. I used to always admire the bubble lights but could never talk the folks into buying them.

  7. We had that treetop star! I haven't thought of that for years.

    1. Sadly the tree we use now won't support the star. I kind of miss using it.

  8. Such lovely sweet memories ...
For many years we had a little angel that went on top of the tree ... she was loved and very well looked after.
Sadly the time came for her to be replaced, and it is now a star that adorns the top of the artificial tree. I still have fond memories of that angel ... funny but it is the little things that do mean a lot!

    All the best Jan
